National CCW Reciprocity? What Would That Look Like?

January 16, 2025

Earlier this week, we reported on CRPA’s support for a national CCW reciprocity bill recently introduced in Congress. Similar bills have been introduced in the past, but the current political landscape provides greater optimism for its potential success this time around.

So what would that look like here in California?  A national law mandating legal carry everywhere in a state that has gone to great lengths to make it illegal to carry almost anywhere?  Well that would be quite an interesting scenario.

To help us all, CRPA Legislative Director Rick Travis stops by CRPA TV for a visit with host Kevin Small.  Rick’s years of experience provide a unique insight into how this would shake out if it comes to pass.  Watch now!

CRPA works hard on CCW reciprocity here in California every day.  In the wake of the Bruen decision, we made it our mission to ensure that each of the state’s 58 counties employs a “Bruen-compliant” CCW application process.

Recently, the Alameda County Sheriff’s Department announced that CCW permit holders who live in several cities within Alameda County would need to renew their permits with the local police departments in those cities, instead of with the Sheriff’s Department. Unfortunately, most of the cities announced that they would treat such renewals as first-time applicants, meaning individuals who already have CCW permits would have to bear the larger expense, wait times, livescan, and costly psych exam all over again as if they had never had a CCW permit before.

CRPA wrote those cities a letter arguing that they should reverse course and treat these applicants as renewal applicants. Today, the first city to respond, San Leandro, has confirmed it will do just that. CRPA thanks San Leandro for its good faith in quickly resolving this matter, and we hope the others will soon do the same.

In addition, counties like Los Angeles, as you can imagine, continue to drag their feet, which has led to the filing of CRPA v. LA Sheriff’s Department, our challenge to a process that delays CCW issuance for YEARS!  That case still faces the gauntlet that is the Ninth Circuit and we need all the help we can get!
