Big Win In Alameda County For CCW Reckoning Project

CRPA’s CCW Reckoning Project, launched in the wake of the Bruen decision just secured a big win in Alameda County, ensuring that current CCW holders were not treated as first-time applicants under a new policy floated by the County Sheriff’s Department.
Last month, the Alameda County Sheriff’s Department announced that CCW permit holders who live in several cities within Alameda County would need to renew their permits with the local police departments in those cities, instead of with the Sheriff’s Department. Unfortunately, most of the cities announced that they would treat such renewals as first-time applicants, meaning individuals who already have CCW permits would have to bear the larger expense, wait times, livescan, and costly psych exam all over again as if they had never had a CCW permit before.
CRPA wrote those cities a letter arguing that they should reverse course and treat these applicants as renewal applicants. After a discussion with these city police departments following our letter, the Alameda County Sheriff’s Department will continue to process CCW permit renewals for anyone who already had a permit originally issued through them. Only first-time applicants will need to go through their local city police departments, if they live in one of the following cities: Emeryville, Piedmont, San Leandro, Pleasanton, Albany, Hayward, Fremont, Livermore, and Union City.
For all other cities in Alameda County, and for those who live in unincorporated parts of the county, first-time applicants may apply with the Sheriff’s Department. Note that the Alameda County Sheriff’s website has not been updated to reflect this yet, but it should be soon.
We are pleased that CRPA was able to work with the parties involved to resolve this without litigation and to support better access to the CCW process in these areas.
