CRPA Engages Key Stakeholders In Mule Deer Campaign

May 13, 2026

In our ongoing fight to stop the brutal eradication of the Catalina Island mule deer population, CRPA sent letters to three key stakeholder agencies seeking their engagement in the battle over the controversial plan.

Letters to U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, the California Coastal Commission, and the State Water Resources Control Board lay out in great detail the pressing need for these agencies to get involved, as well as the legal authorities that provide a path for them to do so.  The tragically flawed plan to eradicate the mule deer from Catalina Island has morphed over time from a grotesque sniper attack to the current strategy of sending in mercenaries to slaughter the animals.

CRPA joined with Safari Club InternationalCalifornia Bowmen Hunters/State Archery AssociationHowl for WildlifeCalifornia Deer Association, and the Coalition to Save Catalina Island Deer to file a lawsuit to save the deer, alleging that the state failed to take the proper steps to exempt the Catalina Conservancy Plan to kill the deer from CEQA requirements and thus violated state law.
