Chuck Michel Talks Wolford LIVE From SHOT Show

January 22, 2026

Earlier this week, the Supreme Court heard oral arguments in the case of Wolford v. Lopez, a challenge to Hawaii’s law restricting concealed carry in virtually any public place. The law is similar in many ways to California’s “sensitive places” restrictions put in place by SB 2, so the outcome of this highly relevant to our state’s lawful gun owners.

In the latest installment of CRPA TV, CRPA President & General Counsel Chuck Michel joins us live from SHOT Show to break down how the Justices positioned themselves during the arguments and what that might portend for the final decision.

In what is shaping up as a historic Supreme Court session for the Second Amendment, the Wolford case represents an opportunity to clarify the “historical analog” standard put in place by Bruen. In questioning Tuesday, Justice Ketanji Brown-Jackson cited Civil War-era “Black Codes” that prohibited gun ownership by newly freed slaves as “analogous” to Hawaii’s law.

Yes, we now have Supreme Court Justices arguing that blatantly discriminatory laws reflect our “history and tradition”. Truly a confounding development.

Next up is oral arguments in U.S. v. Hemani, relating to “prohibited persons” on March 2nd and a decision in the coming weeks on whether the Court will also review Duncan v. Bonta, CRPA’s challenge to CA’s magazine ban.

Please stand with us to help deliver landmark decisions that can truly restore FUNDAMENTAL rights under the Second Amendment!
