Chuck Michel on the Trump DOJ Investigation

April 1, 2025

We in the 2A community are just NOT accustomed to getting a lot of help from Washington, D.C., so last week’s announcement from Attorney General Pam Bondi was a welcome surprise.  The “pattern or practice” investigation of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department launched by the Department of Justice comes at a crucial time for, and was seemingly inspired by, CRPA’s lawsuit against the LA Sheriff’s Department.

To break down what the investigation might mean for our case, as well as for broader 2A legal fights, CRPA President & General Counsel Chuck Michel joined CRPA TV host Kevin SmallWatch now for Chuck’s insightful perspective on what we can expect next.

CRPA’s CCW Reckoning Project seeks Bruen-compliant CCW application processes in all 58 counties in California, reflecting the fact that a new standard was now in place.  Most counties respected it and adapted their processes as needed.  The state dropped the “good cause” requirement (as they basically had to).  Heck, even San Francisco issued its first CCW in YEARS.

But the resistance continues with the legislature continuing propose schemes to burden lawful gun owners.  And notoriously anti-2A jurisdictions drag their feet on complying with the law.  Nowhere has that been more evident that Los Angeles County, where wait times for CCW’s exceed 18 months, fees are exorbitant, and the “leadership” remains more interested in playing games than implementing a process that respects the US Constitution.  As such, legal action was CRPA’s only remaining course of action.

We’re so very grateful for the support of our membership as we’ve pursued our efforts on CCW’s.  This remains a central issue in the larger 2A debate and resistant jurisdictions continue to implement silly administrative parlor tricks to dilute our rights.  CRPA remains on our guard and we’ll keep fighting wherever we are needed!
