Update on San Diego FFL Fee Proposal

Yesterday morning, the Budget and Government Efficiency Committee of the San Diego City Council convened to address the city’s budget deficit. Among the measures discussed was the proposal to increase user fees for Federal Firearms Licensees (FFLs), including alarm permits, employee permits, dealer licenses, and second-hand dealer licenses. This initiative aims to generate additional revenue to mitigate the City’s financial shortfall.
The committee approved the package of “revenue enhancements” but vociferous opposition caused them to relent, and they subsequently moved the item along to the City Council WITHOUT a recommendation of support. No doubt the voices of the 2A defenders in the area were HEARD! The City Council will hear this item next so it is imperative that we keep the pressure on.
CRPA expressed concerns regarding the potential impact of these fee increases on FFLs and called upon our members in the area to make their voice heard. California FFLs already navigate complex state regulations and fees, including an 11% tax instituted by the legislature in the previous year. Additional local fees will further burden these businesses and those fees bear no connection to additional services the City would provide. The City would simply be taxing gun owners because of their own fiscal mismanagement!
We will keep you updated on when the item will be heard and how best to voice your opposition to this onerous fee increase! In the meantime, THANK YOU to all who engaged!
