CRPA Alert: Bad Bills Coming Down the Pipeline ACT NOW
A dark cloud hung over the state capitol building last Friday when all the anti-2A bills that were held in suspense file were brought back from the dead.
In one fell swoop, our rights are back on the chopping block. There are several to mention and a few particular bills that will have great impact on gun owner’s everyday lives.
AB 1297 (McCarty): This bill would require, rather than authorize, the local licensing authority to charge the fee and would require the fee to be in an amount equal to the reasonable costs for processing the application, issuing the license, and enforcing the license, as specified. The bill would delete the prohibition on charging more than $100 for the fee.
What’s happening right now: The bill is set to be voted on during the next Senate Floor session.
Why it matters: The bill would mark up the prices for a CCW permit based on the political motivations of the county’s sheriff rather than a capped fee to make self-protection accessible to lower-income individuals.
AB 879 (Gipson): This bill would commencing July 1, 2024, require the sale of firearm precursor parts, as defined, to be conducted by or processed through a licensed firearm precursor part vendor. Commencing January 1, 2024, the bill would require a person or business to have a valid firearm precursor part vendor license to sell more than one firearm precursor part in any 30-day period. This bill would make a violation of this prohibition would be a misdemeanor.
What’s happening right now: The bill is set to be voted on during the next Senate Floor session.
Why it matters: This bill would effectively redefine “firearm” to include precursor parts that are sold often amongst gun owners. More government over lording.
SB 61 (Portantino) : This bill would make the 30-day prohibition and the dealer delivery prohibition for handguns applicable to centerfire semi-automatic firearms. The bill also prohibits someone under the age of 21 from purchasing a long gun unless they are active military or law enforcement.
What’s happening right now: The bill is set to be voted on during the next Assembly Floor session.
Why it matters: This bill would limit Californians to purchasing one gun per month without exception.
SB 172 (Portantino) : Existing law generally regulates the possession of firearms, including storage requirements to prevent children from gaining access to firearms. Existing law, subject to exceptions, generally requires the loan of a firearm to be conducted by a firearms dealer.
This bill adds additional restrictions on loaning of firearms, increases penalties on ‘improper’ firearm storage, includes unloaded and all firearms in those provisions.
What’s happening right now: The bill is set to be voted on during the next Assembly Floor session.
Why it matters: This bill could make a criminal out of the average citizen, increasing their infraction to a misdemeanor with improper storage with the possibility of losing their rights to firearms for 10 years.
Call your local State Assemblyman and Senator and urge them to vote NO on these bills that would infringe on your rights!
