Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors Consider Banning Gun Shows on County Property  

On Tuesday, March 6, the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors will hold a public meeting to discuss a proposal by Supervisor Ken Yeager to prohibit the sale and possession of firearms on County property. If such a proposal were enacted, it would have the effect of prohibiting gun shows from operating at any county-owed fairgrounds.

In response, attorneys for NRA and CRPA have filed a joint-opposition letter highlighting the superfluous nature of the proposal, as California law already generally prohibits the transfer of firearms from occurring at gun shows. The letter also serves to dispel the many myths perpetuated by anti-gun advocates regarding gun shows by providing the Board with a comprehensive summary of the restrictions applicable to gun show promoters and vendors here in California.

This isn’t the first time anti-gun proponents have sought to ban gun shows through local action. In 2016, a handful of anti-gun San Diego resident petitioned the Del Mar Fairgrounds Board of Directors to discontinue the use of the Fairgrounds by the well-known and well-established Crossroads of the West gun show. Thanks in part to NRA and CRPA efforts and the efforts of our members, the Del Mar Fairgrounds Board of Directors did not pursue any further unnecessary restrictions.

Members should know that no ordinance has been proposed for the County of Santa Clara. Instead, tomorrow’s agenda item only seeks to open discussion on the possibility of enacting such a restriction. To that end, it is critical that all gun owners and Second Amendment supports make their voices heard during the meeting.
