CRPA Continues To Stand In Support Of
Local Law Enforcement And AB 2510
On Wednesday of last week, Assembly Bill 2510 (Linder R – Corona) was passed out of the Appropriations Committee with support from both sides of the aisle.
AB 2510 will allow local law enforcement authorities to issue CCW identification cards to citizens in lieu of the current paper document provided by the California Department of Justice. In addition to the information already required on the card by the CA DOJ,the new CCW identification cards would become more standardized across the state. Cards will also require a current photograph of the CCW license holder, such as the photo that can be found on your driver’s license.
To ensure a smooth transition to this program, officers will be trained to recognize these new identification cards and the CA DOJ will create a database containing examples of the new identification cards, issued by each county, to prevent confusion. Counties will have an opportunity to choose whether to participate in this new program.
A critical aspect of this bill is that counties can opt in and are not mandated to issue these identification cards. By codifying this program as an alternative option to the one already in place, elected officials are creating an opportunity for better cooperation and communication between local law enforcement and the CA DOJ.
CRPA has and will continue to stand with law enforcement in support of AB 2510. AB 2510 will be coming to a vote this Thursday on the Assembly floor, and we strongly encourage you to contact your State Assembly Member to encourage their support for this legislation.
