Palm Springs City Council To Consider Anti-Firearms Ordinance On September 7th

September 2, 2016

On September 7th, the Palm Springs City Council will consider a proposed firearms ordinance that will impact all firearm owners within the City of Palm Springs. The ordinance includes a mandatory duty to report the theft or loss of a firearm to the Palm Springs Police Department within 48 hours, a requirement that all firearms kept in any residence be stored in a locked container, and a prohibition against leaving a concealable firearm or any ammunition in an unattended vehicle unless stored in a locked container.

Originally introduced in July, the ordinance previously included a prohibition against the possession of magazines capable of holding more than 10 rounds and a requirement that all ammunition sales within the City be recorded and reported to the Palm Springs Police Department. In response, the NRA and CRPA submitted a joint letter of opposition, highlighting how many of the proposals are preempted by state law and would otherwise fail to achieve any of the City’s intended goals. The Pink Pistols also submitted their own letter of opposition, pointing out that no such firearm legislation “has had any protective effect against criminal or terrorist activity.”

As a direct result of opposition from the NRA, CRPA, the Pink Pistols, and law-abiding gun owners such as yourself, the City agreed to drop the magazine ban and ammunition-sales-reporting requirements. But the City is still pushing for the adoption of the mandatory theft/loss-reporting and locked-storage requirements. This year, Governor Brown vetoed a nearly identical theft/loss-reporting requirement. What’s more, the locked-storage requirement can only be enforced after the fact, thereby defeating the City’s intended purpose. The NRA and CRPA are committed opposing these ill-advised and ineffective measures, but we need all law-abiding gun owners to contact the City Council to let your voices be heard.

We encourage all of our members to attend the September 7th meeting, which is scheduled to begin at 6:00 PM in Council Chambers, located at:

Palm Springs City Hall
3200 E. Tahquitz Canyon Way
Palm Springs, CA 92262

If you are unable to attend, you may contact the City directly to inform them of your opposition. You can call, fax, or email the City at:
