Lt. Governor Gavin Newsom: You Shouldn’t Have Guns, But I Should

California Lt. Governor Gavin Newsom made an appearance on Real Time With Bill Maher to talk about the terrorist attacks in Paris. Maher asked California’s Lt. Governor what he thought of the idea that the attacks of ISIS would have played out differently if they had been allowed to have guns. Newsom responded,

“This sort of mythology of a guy with a gun that’s going to save the day is right out of the movies, sort of this gun slinging fantasy. The reality is that it is most likely to create more harm, more damage, more lost lives in most circumstances.”

Clearly, Newsom feels that guns should not be in the hands of the citizens, that it is dangerous to have people with firearms on their persons as they go about their days.

Then why does Newsom spend more than one million dollars of tax payers’ money on armed security to surround him?

Breitbart reports that while Newsom was the Mayor of San Francisco, the tax payers spent seven figures on his security detail. As the state’s Lt. Governor, Newsom then increased the security budget by almost $30,000 over his predecessor.

In other words, it is okay for him to be surrounded by guns, that it is okay for him to bring his armed detail into the public, but an average citizen should not be armed because they will do more harm than good.

It could be argued that the Lt. Governor is an important position in the state of California and that the person who holds that office must be protected because of the critical role that they play in official state business, and is therefore justified to spend tax payers’ money to provide protection for themselves.

However, in 2012, the San Francisco Chronicle fact checked Newsom’s activities, comparing where he said he spent his time to where his calendar was saying he spent his time, and found several discrepancies.

Newsom admitted to only being in the state capital one day out of the week. He spoke of his dislike for the atmosphere in the Capital.

“It’s just so dull… sadly, I just, ugh, God.”

The Lt. Governor is paid almost $124,000 dollars per year to perform his job, and yet only spends, according to his own words, 52 days out of the year ‘tops’ in his office at the Capital.

The former San Francisco mayor also said,

“Even if you did 10 editorials about me not being in Sacramento, I wouldn’t be there all the time, because it would add zero value.”

To recap, Newsom thinks that you should not have guns, but he should. Not only that, but it should be the taxpayers who foot the bill for his guns. In addition to that, Newsom holds a position in which he collects over one hundred thousand dollars per year, thanks to the taxpayers, doing a job that he rarely shows up for, and when he does, he believes that he adds zero value.
