San Carlos to Consider Extending Moratorium on Firearm Dealers

On Monday, November 27, the San Carlos City Council will consider extending a moratorium on new firearm dealers for the City. As we reported earlier, the moratorium is a result of several anti-gun residents opposing a new Turner’s Outdoorsman that was scheduled to open this month. The City Council voted to enact a temporary 45-day moratorium to allow time for the City to consider implementing a more restrictive zoning ordinance. But should the City Council vote to extend the moratorium, it will be extended for 10 months and 15 days and will prohibit Turner’s from opening during that time.

NRA and CRPA attorneys submitted a comprehensive joint-opposition letter to the City Council before it first adopted the 45-day moratorium. That letter highlights the numerous complex and comprehensive requirements for becoming a California licensed firearms dealer, as well as all of the security, record keeping, and transfer requirements that all dealers, including Turner’s Outdoorsman, must abide by when operating a firearm retail business in California.

Nevertheless, the City Council voted 4-1 to enact the moratorium, arguing that the proposed Turner’s Outdoorsman would somehow be detrimental to the public peace, health, welfare, and safety of San Carlos residents. What’s more, some of the City Council members prepared speeches in advance favoring adoption of the moratorium—well before hearing from representatives of Turner’s Outdoorsman during the City Council meeting.

We encourage all of our members who are able to attend tonight’s meeting and voice their opposition, which is scheduled to begin at 7:00 PM in Council Chambers, located at 600 Elm Street, San Carlos, CA 94070. Representatives of Turner’s Outdoorsman will also be in attendance.
