NRA And CRPA Publish Compliance Guide For Gun Owners Residing In Or Traveling Through Anti-Gun California Cities And Counties

On September 16, the NRA and CRPA published a compliance guide for gun owners who reside in or travel through one of California’s many anti-gun jurisdictions. These jurisdictions, with their varying rules and requirements pertaining to firearms, have created a dangerous patchwork quilt of laws that can easily trap otherwise law-abiding gun owners in criminal prosecution when these local laws are inadvertently violated.

These local laws are the result of anti-gun forces pushing their failed state legislative proposals into local jurisdictions. Local politicians seeking to build name recognition for their next political campaign often jump at the chance to push these ill-conceived ordinances. The most commonly promoted ordinances require gun owners to report the theft or loss of a firearm within a certain amount of time or require that all firearms kept in one’s home be stored in a locked-container or disabled with a trigger lock. Although facially benign, the ordinances present a myriad of problems for gun owners and create an environment in which gun owners cannot cooperate with police without risking prosecution. The NRA and CRPA are committed to fighting anti-gun laws at all levels of government, including the local level. This guide was made possible by the Local Ordinance Project (“LOP”), a joint venture between NRA and CRPA to research and actively monitor all of California’s 58 counties and 482 municipalities to oppose any proposed ordinance, law, or policy that threatens Second Amendment rights. In many instances, LOP efforts have prompted local governments to vote down proposals or pull them from consideration. LOP efforts also serve as the foundation for NRA and CRPA litigation efforts against municipalities that enact anti-gun legislation. For a summary of recent LOP efforts, click here.
