A Big Step Forward In The Fight For The Right To Defend Yourself In CA

February 8, 2018

CRPA is committed to fighting for your right to keep and bear arms in the legislature, the courts, and the governor’s mansion. As part of our plan to fight back against this state’s draconian laws, CRPA is running proactive 2nd Amendment bills in the legislature this session. We are proud to support these two fantastic pro-CCW bills in the Assembly and will fight hard to push them to the Governor’s desk.

AB 1931 (Fong, R) aims to give sheriffs the opportunity to issue five year concealed carry licenses. Under current California law, concealed carry licenses can only be issued for two years at a time. With the current system, countless amounts of money and staff time are used every year in processing concealed carry license renewals. In addition to wasting taxpayer dollars and the valuable time of our law enforcement agencies, the current law creates a burden on the average law abiding armed citizen exercising their constitutional right to carry.

If passed, AB 1931 will give sheriffs the ability to issue extended licenses; meaning that California’s permit system will be brought into step with much of the rest of the country. Additionally, by extending the permits to five years, our law enforcement agencies will save money and manhours that can be better applied towards ensuring the safety of our communities. Sponsored by California’s sheriffs, this bill is a fantastic step in the right direction when it comes to concealed carry in this state.

We would like to thank California’s sheriffs, as well as Assemblyman Fong for their dedication to improving our state’s concealed carry licensing laws and to saving our state’s law enforcement agencies valuable resources. Contact your Assembly Member today and tell them to support AB 1931!

AB 1932 (Fong, R) proposes changes to the current process for issuing concealed carry licenses. Currently, California law states that upon receiving all of the required documents, DOJ must promptly furnish a background check and send the licensing authority (the sheriff or police dept.) a report of the data. Unfortunately, under the current law, the background check is not conducted promptly. There have been many reported instances of CCW applicants waiting months for DOJ to forward background check information to licensing authorities.

If passed, AB 1932 will require DOJ to furnish the background check within 60 days. By removing the vague language of the current law, AB 1932 will hold DOJ accountable and force them to perform their constitutionally mandated duties in a timely fashion. The new 60 day requirement will result in faster turnaround times for CCW applicants, meaning that law abiding citizens who wish to exercise their constitutional right to carry a gun will be able to do so in a timely manner.

CRPA is proud to co-sponsor this bill with Assemblyman Fong, who is a truly dedicated supporter of the 2nd Amendment in California. We would like to express our sincerest appreciation to the Assemblyman for his deep understanding of the constitutional right of Californians to keep and bear arms. Contact your Assembly Member today and tell them to vote yes on AB 1932!
