Help Keep Iconic Bay Area Shooting Range Open

February 24, 2016

Chabot Gun Club (CGC) is a 65-acre shooting facility nestled in Anthony Chabot Regional Park in Castro Valley, California. CGC is one of the few Bay Area ranges to feature public lines for rifle, pistol, and shotgun shooting. This beautiful range needs your help to stay open!

Despite existing for over half a century and catering to tens of thousands of shooters annually, the club and all of its shooting facilities may be forced to close down soon. CGC’s landlord, the Board of Directors of the East Bay Regional Park District (EBRPD) will vote on the fate of CGC on March 1, 2016 at 2 P.M. at the Redwood Canyon Golf Course, 17007 Redwood Road in north Castro Valley. We need all shooting and range supporters to show up for this meeting! We need everyone, including those who shoot at other ranges, because you could be next! Please tell the EBRPD how much you love shooting at CGC and that it has a responsibility to continue allowing for recreational shooting activity on park property.

If possible, come in person to show your support for CGC. Please wear blue, Chabot’s color. The room where the meeting is scheduled can hold up to 300 people, so please bring a friend and show up early. There should be plenty of parking there and lots more parking along Redwood Road around the golf course and in the Chabot Staging Area by the Christmas Tree farm.

The California Rifle and Pistol Association (CRPA) has already submitted a letter asking EBRPD to renew CGC’s lease.  Founded in 1875, the California Rifle and Pistol Association (“CRPA”) is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the shooting sports by providing education, training, and organized competition for adult and junior shooters. CRPA’s members include law enforcement officers, professionals, firearm experts, hunters, the general public, and loving parents. The creation and preservation of shooting ranges is an integral part of CRPA’s mission.

In its letter, CRPA points out that CGC is an important range for local law enforcement, military members, security firms, boy scouts, competitors, and gun owners in the area and urged EBRPD to extend CGC’s lease so that CRPA can grant $10,000 to address any issues at the range.

The CRPA was joined by other interested parties in submitting a letter of support for renewing CGC’s lease, including the NRA Foundation and both the national and Oakland chapters of the Pink Pistols, as well as countless individuals. While this is a good start, much more must be done. The fight is not over.

CGC needs everyone’s help to stop the county from closing down the range. So whether you are able to personally attend or not, please keep sending emails to the individual EBRPD Directors telling them why you think CGC is an important public asset. Share the positive experiences you have had at CGC.
