Gun Laws Are Ineffective

June 22, 2018

This week, while the California State legislature is advancing bills left and right to limit Californians’ gun rights, there were three separate examples in the news that exposed a simple fact: gun laws don’t work.

These three news stories come from separate parts of the nation as well as one foreign nation where gun restrictions are unfathomably strict.

  • The first was the most local, in California, where an LA County Sheriff raid of a private residence resulted in the seizing of 432 firearms from the possession of a convicted felon, 60-year-old Manuel Fernandez. The felon had a gun and ammo stash so large, that it could not fit in just one residence. LA County Sheriffs had to obtain a second warrant for another residence in order to collect his amassed collection of illegally possessed firearms. There are several state and federal gun laws that are violated in this case, and yet these laws are ignored by criminals.
  • The second news story took place in Toronto. A city whose country has some of the strictest gun laws in the region. And what happened here? 78 handguns were collected in a 9-month investigation on a local gang, requiring 52 search warrants and resulting in 75 arrests. Canada, a country where there is no legal right to possess firearms, and it is illegal to possess handguns, still deals with criminals not following the laws set in place.
  • The third, a story out of Atlanta, Georgia. This news story took place in the least restrictive setting of the three in regards to gun laws. And here, a good guy with a gun was the one who saved a victim of gun violence. Two 16-year-olds were seen beating a pregnant woman with a rifle when a good Samaritan came to her rescue and threatened the assailants with his firearm before they fled. The teenagers were charged with assault, possession of a firearm and attempt to commit robbery. Gun laws restrict teenagers from possessing firearms. Did gun laws ever stop them from carrying out their crimes?

The 2A community must pay attention and commit themselves to fight senseless and ineffective regulation. Gun laws are set in place to be broken by criminals and to be followed by responsible gun owners. Additional gun laws will not make the population safer but allow for criminals to wield the power of the firearm over us. Please stay tuned with CRPA for ways how to make yourself of service to preserving your Second Amendment rights for yourself and for posterity.
