DOJ Releases New Regulatory Definitions

April 21, 2022

Yesterday, the Department of Justice announced it is amending Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives (ATF) regulatory guidance relating to firearms. Among the amended regulations are several key definitions, including “firearm frame and receiver” and “frame and receiver”, as well as “firearm” and “gunsmith”. The newly released regulations also clarify meanings of terms such as “complete weapon”. The complete regulations can be found here.

Earlier this year, CRPA urged our membership to submit comments on the proposed regulations. We are encouraged that so many of you chose to engage with this process.  As always, it is essential that our collective voice is heard on key issues like this.

CRPA’s legal team is currently reviewing the 364-page document to assess its implications.  Dissecting voluminous regulatory language, and challenging its impacts where needed, is a key element of CRPA’s day-to-day efforts to protect the Second Amendment.
