Anti-Gun Legislation Makes Its Way to Committees This Week

California Legislation Set For Committee Hearings This Week!

This morning  California Assembly committees considered several pieces of anti-gun legislation and tomorrow the Senate committees will do the same.

The Assembly Public Safety Committee held hearings all day on AB 2847, AB 2532, and AB 2362. We alerted members of this last week and told you that the ability to respond to these bills ahead of the committee hearing have been limited due to COVID-19 issues.

AB 2847, sponsored by Assembly Member  Chiu (D-17), revises the criteria for handguns to be certified for sale by requiring a microstamp in one place on the interior of the handgun (current law requires two imprinting locations). The bill would also require the removal of three certified handguns from the roster for each new handgun added.​ It is unclear how those firearms already on the list might be removed and what criteria they would use, but it is clear that this is a completely arbitrary attempt at further limiting the types of firearms Californian’s can purchase.The Committee voted it out of committee with only one “No” vote by Assembly member Lackey. It will now move forward to appropriations.

AB 2362, sponsored by Assembly Member  Muratsuchi (D-66), authorizes the Department of Justice to levy monetary fines of up to $1,000 on licensed firearms dealers for minor technical violations.This bill voted out of committee with only two “No” votes by Assembly members Lackey and Diep.

 

AB 2532, Irwin: Firearms: gun violence restraining orders.

POSITION: Oppose

This bill would allow psychotherapists in addition to law enforcement, immediate family, employers, and coworkers, to notify the district attorney of such a threat and would require the district attorney, when receiving a report of such a threat, to notify the department.

03/05/20: Legislative Committee oppose approved/03/12/20 Position approved by board.
This bill voted out of committee with only two “No” votes by Lackey and Diep. 

 

Tomorrow the Senate considers SB 914 in committee. The Senate Public Safety Committee will hear testimony tomorrow at 9am on SB 914. Click here to view the hearing. 

SB 914, sponsored by Senator  Portantino (D-25), would limit when a hunting license satisfies the requirements for purchasing a long gun for those under 21 by requiring the license to be currently valid. This bill also would place more limits on the loaning of long guns to minors and raise fees for eligibility checks on some types of ammunition and precursor parts.
