Alec Baldwin Case Tossed: Was Justice Done?

August 8, 2024

We’re coming up on three years since the tragic shooting death of Halyna Hutchins during the filming of Rust.  In the intervening months, Hutchins’ family brought a civil suit against actor Alec Baldwin as the investigation into the incident began to illuminate just how reckless the production, and Baldwin himself, had been in their handling of firearms on the set.

The criminal investigation resulted in Baldwin and Hannah Gutierrez Reed, the film’s armourer, being charged with two counts of involuntary manslaughter in January of last year.  On July 12th, the case against Baldwin was dismissed “with prejudice” before it was even tried, as the judge ruled that the prosecutors had “withheld evidence”.

On the latest installment of CRPA TV, Kevin Small welcomes back attorney Matt Cubeiro to discuss how a case with such intense interest collapsed so quickly.  Are rulings like this common?  What does it mean to have the case dismissed “with prejudice”?  And, most important, was justice done?
