Jerry Brown’s Nominee For Attorney General Is No Friend Of The Second Amendment

January 7, 2017

This Tuesday, January 10th, the California State Assembly is scheduled to begin its confirmation hearing on Governor Jerry Brown’s nominee to replace Kamala Harris as Attorney General. Governor Brown’s nominee, Congressman Xavier Becerra, will be responsible for leading the California Department of Justice (DOJ) and serving as California’s top law enforcement official and attorney. In this capacity, Congressman Becerra will be overseeing over 4,500 employees, ranging from attorneys to peace officers.

If confirmed, Congressman Becerra will also oversee The Bureau of Firearms, which operates as a part of the DOJ and is the main authority over items that have to do with firearms in California.

In his capacity as a Congressman, Becerra has shown that he is no friend of the Second Amendment. He is also not interested in protecting the rights of hunters and sportsmen. In fact, Congressman Becerra has consistently voted against NRA supported bills.

Below, you will see a preview of countless occasions in which Congressman Becerra voted against the Second Amendment and the rights of law-abiding Americans:

H.R. 766 – the Financial Institution Customer Protection Act of 2015, which would have prohibited the use of programs such as “Operation Choke Point” against firearms businesses.

H.R. 822 – the National Right-to-Carry Reciprocity Act of 2011, which would have allowed permit holders to carry in any state that has a permit system.

H.R. 3590 & H.R. 4089 – twice voted against a Sportsmen’s Heritage and Recreational Enhancement Act, which would have protected hunting as a primary use of federal lands and would have provided funds for the construction and maintenance of shooting ranges on public lands.

H.R. 6842 would have restored Second Amendment rights in Washington, D.C.

It is crucial that we do our part to stop the appointment of individuals who do not believe in the right to own a firearm for sport or protection. Especially stopping them from becoming the highest-ranking law enforcement official in California.

Now is the time to call your Assembly Member and tell them to vote against the confirmation of Congressman Becerra and insist that only an individual who believes in the right to keep and bear arms should be given the opportunity to hold the prestigious position of Attorney General.
