Goodbye AB 262! (And What To Expect As The Legislature Wraps)

August 13, 2024

It’s August of a Presidential election year and the California legislature will soon enter the closing days of its two year session.  Just over 2,100 bills were considered, down notably from about 2,600 last year.

Why so many?  Well, one reason is that some bills just keep getting introduced over and over again.  AB 262 is one of these so-called “zombie bills”.

Originally introduced several years back as a means of correcting abuses at children’s summer camps in light of the tragic death of a camper, the bill morphed over time to poke the state’s nose into camps that include firearm training.  As readers of this email might predict, that was more a ploy to end such programs than it was about anyone’s safety.

On the latest installment of CRPA TV, Rick Travis joins the show to talk about the latest (and hopefully final?) defeat of the bill, as well as what might be in store in what are often chaotic times at the end of a legislative session.
