Update On DOJs Improper Disclosure Of Certified Safety Instructors Personal Information

February 16, 2017

As previously reported, the California Department of Justice (DOJ) improperly disclosed the personal information of DOJ certified Firearm Safety Certificate (FSC) instructors. In this release, the private information of over 3,424 Firearm Safety Instructors was revealed to the public.

This release was prompted by Aaron Mendelson, a reporter for Southern California Public Radio (KPCC). Mendelson had submitted a Public Records Request on August 24, 2016, but understood that some of the information about the instructors would be redacted due to privacy laws. This, unfortunately, was not the case.

Upon first becoming aware of this troubling incident, the CRPA legal team began to explore the issue further and have now prepared an informational bulletin on the subject. You can read the whole bulletin by visiting: bit.ly/CRPANBDOJ.
